A rifle that prints dead center at 25 yards can still put rounds several inches away from your intended point of aim farther downrange. That is why a rifle zeroing distance example matters more than a quick group on a paper target. Your zero is a trajectory decision. It determines how much holdover or hold-under you need when the clock is moving, the wind is present, and the target is not conveniently parked at one distance.
For a defensive or general-purpose AR-15, the best zero is not the one with the most internet support. It is the one that matches your optic, ammunition, barrel setup, likely engagement distances, and ability to confirm it at the range. Build the rifle around the mission, then verify the data.
Rifle Zeroing Distance Example: The 50/200-Yard Zero
A practical example starts with a common 5.56 NATO or .223 Remington AR-15 firing a 55-grain or 62-grain load, using a red dot or low-power variable optic mounted roughly 2.6 inches above the bore. Zero the rifle at 50 yards, then confirm where it impacts at 200 yards. With many common carbine setups, the bullet will cross the line of sight near 50 yards and again near 200 yards.
The useful result is a relatively flat practical trajectory inside that window. Depending on your exact load and atmospheric conditions, the round may rise roughly 1.5 to 2 inches above your point of aim around 100 to 150 yards, then return near point of aim around 200 yards. Past 200, drop becomes more pronounced. At 300 yards, a common 5.56 load may be roughly 7 to 10 inches low, but that number is not a firing solution until you validate it with your rifle.
This makes the 50/200-yard zero a strong all-around choice for shooters who want a simple point-of-aim approach from close range through mid-range distances. It is especially effective with a non-magnified optic and torso-size targets. The trade-off is precision. If you are trying to place a round on a small target at 100 yards, the rifle may impact high enough to matter.
A 50-yard zero is not automatically a 200-yard zero. Barrel length, muzzle velocity, bullet weight, sight height, and ammunition lot variation all change the trajectory. Treat 200 yards as a confirmation distance, not a promise.
How Other Zero Distances Change the Mission
The 25-yard zero
A 25-yard zero is fast and convenient when range space is limited, but it requires discipline. For many AR-platform rifles, a 25-yard zero can correspond to a second intersection around 300 yards, with the bullet traveling noticeably high through much of the middle distance. Depending on the setup, that high arc can create a miss on smaller targets if you use a dead-center hold at 100 to 200 yards.
That does not make a 25-yard zero wrong. It can make sense for a rifle intended around a specific qualification course or a known ballistic standard. But a short-range zero should be confirmed at the longer distance it is intended to represent. Do not assume a tight 25-yard group has settled the matter.
The 36-yard zero
The 36-yard zero has earned a following because it can offer useful holds from close range through 300 yards with common 5.56 loads. Its trajectory typically rises higher than a 50/200 setup through the mid-range, then returns around the 300-yard mark. For shooters using a reticle with calibrated holds, it can be a capable field option.
The cost is that the rifle may print several inches high around 150 to 200 yards. That is manageable if you know it and train around it. It is less forgiving if your only plan is to put the dot in the exact center of every target.
The 100-yard zero
A 100-yard zero is the cleanest choice for a magnified optic, a precision-oriented carbine, or a rifle where you want the least ambiguity at the distance you can regularly verify. Your point of aim and point of impact meet at 100 yards, making it easy to track elevation adjustments and build a dope card.
The downside is more required holdover beyond 100 yards. A shooter with an LPVO, a quality scope, or a reticle designed for elevation holds can solve that problem quickly. A shooter with a plain red dot must know the drops and apply them consistently. For deliberate range work and accuracy-focused use, the 100-yard zero remains hard to beat.
Set Up the Zero Before You Fire
Zeroing starts before the first round leaves the muzzle. Confirm that the optic mount is properly secured to the receiver, not bridged between the receiver and handguard. Use the manufacturer’s torque specifications. A shifting mount turns every group into bad information.
Use the ammunition you expect to run. A rifle zeroed with lightweight practice ammunition may not strike at the same point with a heavier bonded defensive load. The difference can be small at 25 yards and significant at 100 or 200. If your operational load matters, zero and confirm with it.
Start from a stable supported position. Sandbags, a pack, or a solid bench rest reduce shooter input and expose what the rifle and optic are actually doing. Keep the rifle supported at the handguard or fore-end, not on the barrel. Use a consistent cheek weld and a controlled trigger press. Zeroing is not a speed drill.
A Practical Zeroing Process
Bore-sight the rifle first if possible. This does not replace live-fire confirmation, but it can put the initial impacts on paper and save ammunition. At the range, fire a careful three- or five-round group at your chosen zero distance. Adjust the optic based on the center of the group, not one lucky round or one pulled shot.
Most optics express adjustment in minutes of angle or milliradians. At 100 yards, one MOA is approximately 1 inch. At 50 yards, one MOA moves impact about half an inch. A 1/2-MOA click therefore shifts impact about a quarter-inch at 50 yards. Check the markings on your optic rather than guessing. A wrong adjustment calculation wastes time and ammunition.
After making an adjustment, fire another group. Once the group center aligns with the intended point of aim, let the barrel cool briefly and shoot a final confirmation group. Then move to the distance that validates the trajectory. A 50-yard zero deserves a 200-yard check. A 25-yard setup needs its intended far-distance confirmation. A 100-yard zero should be tested at 200 and 300 yards so you know your actual holds.
Record the result. Note the rifle, barrel length, optic, mount height, load, zero distance, temperature, and confirmed impacts at extended distances. A compact data card in a range bag is more useful than trying to remember what the rifle did six months ago.
Sight Height Changes Close-Range Holds
The optic sits well above the bore on an AR-15. At very close distances, the bullet has not climbed to meet the line of sight yet. Even with a 50/200-yard zero, the impact at 5 or 10 yards can be roughly 2 to 3 inches low. That is not an optic failure. It is mechanical offset.
For a tight, high-value hit at close range, hold high by the amount of your sight-over-bore offset. This is one of the most important details to confirm during training. A zero tells you where the rifle intersects at distance. It does not erase geometry at close range.
Confirm Under Real Range Conditions
A bench zero establishes the baseline. It is not the final standard. Once the rifle is confirmed, shoot it from prone, kneeling, standing, and around practical support. Work at close distance, then at the far edge of your intended use. This is where a quality optic, a stable mount, and ammunition that groups consistently earn their place in a mission-ready loadout.
Watch for shifts after transport, hard use, optic changes, or ammunition changes. Reconfirm after installing a new mount, adjusting the stock position, or making any change that affects your shooting interface. The rifle does not care what the turrets said last season. It only cares where rounds impact now.
Choose the zero that gives you the clearest answer at the distances you truly expect to shoot, verify it with your actual equipment, and keep the data where you can use it. Confidence is not a setting on the optic. It is confirmed impact, repeatable holds, and a rifle that stays on target when it counts.
